We’re used to seeing her in pleated skirts and button-down shirts (why risk getting slushie stains on something cute?) in her role as Rachel Berry on the Fox hit Glee, but in real life Lea Michele has got killer style. She’s even landed on our Look of the Day list twice (for pulling off a body-con bandage dress from Zac Posen and getting edgy in motocross jeans). Still, we did a double take when Michele vamped up the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon in a strapless leather Shosana L dress from Theory. The dress won’t arrive in stores until the end of November, but we hear that customers can call their local Theory store to pre-order.

Glee offers a fresh take on the musical — it’s sometimes called a “postmodern musical” — in the form of light TV comedy-drama. The plot revolves around a high-school glee club responsible for putting together productions that incorporate song and dance. In a classic underdog story, the glee club’s members all strive to realize their potential as performers, but unlike most musicals, there aren’t arbitrary bursts into song; instead, the glee club attempts to put together appropriate school performances.
The cast is teeming with experienced performers and Broadway stars. The main cast includes Matthew Morrison (Hairspray, The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific), Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays, Jessalyn Gilsig, Lea Michele (Spring Awakening, The King and I), Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Dianna Agron and more. Earlier this month, the first album-length spin-off, Glee: The Music, Volume 1, came out. The disc features a series of a cappella covers and instrumental versions of popular rock, contemporary pop, hip-hop and R&B songs.
Here, Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory Monteith (Finn) and Amber Riley (Mercedes) join David Dye to chat about the hit show and its music in a session from World Cafe.

Why has Fox’s “Glee” succeeded when so many musical television series have failed? Between the script, the song choices and the cast — as well as production, marketing and Columbia Records working in lock step — there isn’t a weak link, the team behind the hit show said Friday.
Executives from Fox and Columbia joined the show’s music supervisor P.J. Bloom, cast member Lea Michele and “Glee” music producer Adam Anders at the Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film & TV Music Conference to discuss what’s driven millions of “Glee” song downloads and two forthcoming soundtrack volumes.
From the beginning, the strategy for setting up partnerships for the show was very different. Rather than keeping the pilot a secret, Fox presented it to as many music publishers and record labels as it could to get them on board for clearances from the get-go, said 20th Century Fox Television head of music Geoff Bywater. Even Journey’s Steve Perry came to watch his band’s iconic “Don’t Stop Believin’” get incorporated into the first episode.
“We haven’t been turned down by one songwriter,” Bywater said. “Maybe one … there’s a reason to be concerned about a new show when you’re committing your copyrights to it.” But now that “Glee” is a hit, Bloom said the show is fielding pitches from artists that don’t normally allow their music to be used on television.
Lea Michele, a Broadway veteran who plays Rachel Berry, said adapting to pop and R&B fare for television was “really scary.”
“I’m a musical theater performer. I perform live on stage every night,” said Michele, recalling that while recording Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” she “cursed that day more than I have in my whole life. (But) once you get past that fear, it’s like (working) a muscle … I rocked out Salt N’ Pepa, people!”

How can you not adore Lea Michele? As the leading lady of Fox’s musical gem, the Broadway vet has turned teen diva Rachel Berry into the girl most likely to steal your heart and the show. Off-screen, she’s just as awesome, but unlike her alter ego, Michele is happy to share the spotlight. In this exclusive Q&A, she sings the praises of her equally talented costars and Glee creator Ryan Murphy, and reveals the one song that got away. For more with Lea—including a tidbit about her big number in December’s mid-season finale— check out TV Guide Magazine’s Oct. 26th issue.
How did this all start for you?
I met Ryan in 2007. I was doing “Spring Awakening” and my costar Jonathan Groff just happened to be out of the show for the month of November…he was filming the pilot for [Murphy’s unsold series] Pretty-Handsome. Then the Broadway stagehands went on strike, so I didn’t have a show for the month either, so I said to Jonathan ‘instead of sitting on my hands in New York, why don’t I come visit you in California?’ And that’s when I first met Ryan. I went out to dinner with him one night and just fell in love with him. You have to know him…when you sit down with him, you realize that he is one of the most loyal, caring, smart people you will ever meet. A year later I read for Glee and when I got the part, I said ‘do you remember me?’ And he told me that he had written it with me in mind.
